Directions: Read through the different National History Day categories and find jobs and skills that you are interested in. Consider doing the category of project that has jobs and skills that you are interested in.

Historical Paper

  1. Do I want to be a writer?
    1. People who have strong writing skills are needed across several fields. Policemen, authors, teachers, soldiers, economists, and lawyers all have to write reports and other types of writing.
  2. Do you want to write for a newspaper?
  3. Do I enjoy writing?
  4. Do you like to tell stories?
  5. Do you like to daydream or use your imagination to create a different kind of world?
  6. Am I more comfortable expressing myself on paper rather than in front of an audience?
  7. Am I trying to convey a complex idea that requires a lot of explanation?

Performance

  1. Do I want to be an actor?
    1. You get to act in a play that you created!
  2. Do you want to work in backstage theater?
    1. You can help create theater productions.
  3. Do want to be a builder, architect, or designer such as homes, mechanics, or engineering?
    1. Scenes will need to have props and sets, and someone needs to build them.
  4. Do you want to work with fashion design?
    1. Actors need clothing, makeup, jewelry, and other fashion elements. You can help create or find them.
  5. Do you like to sing or play an instrument?
    1. These talents can be a part of your show.
  6. Would you like to write screen plays, movie scripts, or have some kind of job writing stories?
    1. You can be as creative as you want when writing your play.
  7. Do you want to do something with public speaking (lawyer, teacher, news media)?
    1. Performing in front of an audience is great practice.

Exhibit

  1. Do want to be a builder,  architect, or designer such as homes, mechanics, construction or engineering?
    1. Exhibits are large, like the kind you see at museums. There are a lot of ways you could practice building something you would be proud of.
    2. You can build structures out of whatever you want: cardboard, wood, metal, PVC pipe, legos; I once saw a project made out of a hollowed artillery shell.
  2. Are you an artist?
    1. You can make an art display of something historical.
  3. Do you want to be a photographer or edit photos?
    1. If your topic has sources that are close, you can take original photos and edit them.
  4. Do you want to work with mathematics?
    1. You need to design and create large exhibits which need to have a lot of mathematical planning.

Documentary

  1. Do you want to learn how to make movies or short films?
    1. This is a great talent to have if you want to be a business person, or someone who shares video content.
  2. Do you like technology, like computers, cameras, and film?
    1. If you want to be a photographer, movie editor, or work with news media or online sales, then you can get a lot of practice by making a documentary.
  3. Do you enjoy acting or doing voice overs?
    1. Part of your documentary can be acting short scenes. Voice overing is extremely important in documentaries; is is really impressive when you can do an accent.
  4. Do you want to work with fashion design?
    1. Actors need clothing, makeup, jewelry, and other fashion elements. You can help create or find them.
  5. Do want to be a builder, architect, or designer such as homes, mechanics, or engineering?
    1. Some scenes will need to have props and sets, and someone needs to build them.
  6. Do you want to be a news anchor, lawyer, professional traveler, or public figure (politician, social media personality) 
    1. All of these groups have to interview people. You can interview professionals and put their interview into your documentary.

Websites

  1. Am I interested in showing several different types of images or specific images that I created?
    1. If you are an artist then you can share your art on a website.
  2. Am I interested in showing different media clips or music.
    1. If you are musical or want to make short videos, then you can add these to your website; but you only get 4 minutes of video time.
  3. Am interested in video game design?
    1. You can add games to your website by using different apps.
  4. Do you want to have your own business one day or work with marketing/publicity?
    1. Most businesses have a website that they manage to reach their customers.
  5. Do I have a basic knowledge about developing websites, or willingness to learn?
  6. Can I effectively present my topic in a website?
  7. Do I enjoy working with computers?
